OLDCASTLE BRINGS "INSIDE OUTSIDE" LIVING TO THE NEW AMERICAN HOME®
Innovative Masonry Products Blend Olde World Charm with 21st Century Technology
Las Vegas, NV - March 15, 2004 - Designers of The New American Home? (TNAH) relied on the quality and flexibility of Oldcastle products to create Las Vegas' only full-masonry, single-family residence. Merlin Contracting & Developing, LLC, incorporated Belgard pavers and Slump Block into the modern and sleek loft home's design to not only create a feeling of Olde World charm, but also an "inside outside" living environment - an increasingly popular trend across the country. The home was featured as part of the International Builders Show, which took place January 19 through 22.
Every year since 1984, the National Association of Home Builders' National Council of Housing Industry and Builder Magazine have joined forces to produce TNAH, which provides show attendees with design ideas for future projects - be it a single feature or the entire home. This year's home featured an all-masonry loft style design built on lakefront property in The Lakes at West Sahara subdivision.
The New American Home featured two main products of the Oldcastle Architectural Products Group (APG) throughout its interior and exterior, showcasing their multifunctional uses. Slump Block, developed by Superlite Block, Oldcastle's local Arizona company, served as both the home's veneer and as an architectural centerpiece on the main living room wall, and the developer also used Belgard's Dublin Modular pavers for the driveway, central walkway and steps.
According to Bart Jones, CFO of Merlin Contracting & Developing, LLC, "Superlite Block an Oldcastle company, provided us with a beautiful product that could be applied in a variety of ways." He continued, "In this case, we used their Slump Block in a very non-traditional manner to give an Olde World feeling to a sleek and modern loft design."
Slump Block is designed to provide homeowners with functionality, malleability, durability and aesthetic beauty. The developers of TNAH cut off the block's facing, adhered them to ICF Walls, and finished the fa?ade with a mortar wash. The same technique was incorporated in the living room to create a seamless bridge between the home's exterior and interior, which was reinforced by the use of terraces, patios, balconies and natural lighting. Approximately 10,000 Slump Blocks and 1,000 sq. ft. of pavers were used in development of the home.
"Most people are surprised by the functionality of concrete products," said Bob DeRosa, Vice President of Sales California, Oldcastle APG West. "We are proud to be the largest product supplier for this prestigious undertaking and were pleased that it showcased the quality, durability and malleability of our masonry solutions."
The creation of Las Vegas' first complete concrete home was not the only remarkable aspect of the project. The building process also included international cooperation among Merlin, Nevada and California architect Willem Kymell and Dutch architectural consultants, Food For Buildings. Perhaps the most striking aspect of the project was that it sold within two days of the show's conclusion for the full market price of more than $1.9 million.
"We knew being a part of this project was special," said DeRosa. "That was confirmed for all by the overwhelming interest and quick sale of the home following the show."
